This handmade Powell flute is absolutely gorgeous, and is still in its original box.  It is in MINT condition, both aesthetically, and mechanically.  Bought brand new in June of 2008, it was played very little afterwards, and is as "new" as a pre-owned flute gets.

 

This beautiful instrument is characterized by the typical quality of a handmade Powell:  It is the Conservatory model, with a sterling silver head, body and foot, drawn tone holes, .016 tubing, modern Powell Scale,  A=442, offset g, French cups, and b foot w/ gizmo.

The headjoint is a hand cut "Soloist", which is one of the newer cuts, designed in collaboration with Ransom Wilson.  I wish this cut had been available when I bought my Powell in the early 80's. I am very impressed with it.  The factory description is as follows:

"The Soloist headjoint is the newest addition to the headjoint styles offered by Powell. This new style was developed in collaboration with renowned flutist, Ransom Wilson. The Soloist headjoint features strength and flexibility. It offers a strong sound which allows the player to fill a hall, as well as complete command for performing the quietest of passages. The embouchure plate, which is similar to the Boston style, provides the player with quick, responsive articulation while a new style of undercutting gives the headjoint its strong, full color." 

 

I just finished a thorough play-test covering various styles of music, and I was impressed with how full and rich the sound is in all registers, and how much volume it is capable of in the lower register. The response is immediate and very crisp on rapidly tongued passages, and there are many possibilities to expand on color, expression, and dynamics.  Beautiful!  Please feel free to ask for a video of this flute being played.
